Alternative Breaks Alabama

This spring break, we will embark on a one-week national trip that will allow us to explore and engage in the social justice issue of racial inequality and the effects racial segregation has on promoting the cycle of poverty and education inequality. Our team will be serving in a historically rich southern town that played a major role in the Civil Rights Movement, but has since struggled to rise above the oppressive forces of racial tension and poverty. By enveloping ourselves in the deep roots of history, we will work alongside a local nonprofit to promote community development through youth education. Our service will incorporate a diverse range of projects in order to fully understand the challenges our community faces. Since education is at the core of these issues, we will engage in collaborative work with the nonprofit to tutor students in an afterschool program, assist in a learning center, and help repair a community center. Please join us in ending racial inequality and poverty through the advancement of education, while also exploring our country’s rich historical past and forging lasting relationships.

Students are given the unique chance to directly participate in “hands-on” diagnoses and treatments under the supervision of medical professionals. This is the reason why our motto is “LEARN BY DOING.” As a health-focused organization, our main purpose is to increase awareness of the lack of healthcare in third world countries by giving undergraduate students the chance to expand their understanding of life and medicine outside the United States. This is made possible by educating and exposing students to the prevalent global and medical issues that many underserved communities in developing countries face. Such issues include poverty, poor national health-care systems, and the various circumstances that contribute to and perpetuate a specific population’s situation. GMT also understands there are major health issues that reside right in our own community. It is this very reason why we also offer our students the opportunity to volunteer in various community service events including free health fairs servicing the underprivileged in the Los Angeles and surrounding counties. Altogether, GMT views student volunteers as a vital force for change. After all, they may be the next generation of health-care providers. Therefore, their education, training, and expos

Global Water Brigades

Water Brigades' mission is to empower communities to access sufficient clean water through infrastructural development, water treatment, community leader training, and education. Water Brigades Volunteers assist in designing and implementing water systems to prevent water related illnesses in communities with limited access to clean water. With a sufficient quantity of properly treated water community members can cut off the connection between water and illness and ultimately live healthier more productive lives. In-country team members work with community leaders to design large scale water systems for the entire community. Once planning and design is complete, volunteers work side-by-side with community members to construct the water system. Additionally Water Brigades and its volunteers provide education and training so that the community can properly administer, operate, and maintain their water system. A Water Council and Basic Sanitation Committee are established in communities to ensure the sustainability of the community’s system as well as to improve sanitation and hygiene practices. In collaboration with Public Health Brigades, Microfinance Brigades, and the Global Brigades Honduras Research & Evaluation team, WB is working to identify communities with the most need. With a holistic approach to development we plan to continue working with communities to improve their health and standard of living through the most fundamental resource on the planet, water. Volunteers do not need water engineering experience prior to a Water Brigade, as they will be working directly with our on the ground engineers throughout the building of the water system. The engineers will guide the volunteers on proper building practices and safety precautions during the building of the water system, while also educating the volunteers on the initial design, the long-term sustainability, and workings of the system.

Our first and primary goal is to assist underprivileged communities with free medical care, medicine, and health education to improve the prevalent illnesses seen in underdeveloped communities. Our secondary goal at IHC is to provide undergraduate students with the resources necessary to pursue their interests in the health care. These resources include first-hand experience in a public medical setting by personally assisting medical professionals. They also include seminars in which medical professionals of all specialties speak on personal experiences encountered in their field to give attendees choose which specialty to work toward. The International Health Collective serves the communities surrounding a temporary clinic site in Tijuana, Mexico, which functions during three Saturdays per school quarter. IHC strives to diagnose, supply medication, and provide health education to members of the Tijuana community with free doctor consultation, pharmacy care, and seminars. To provide these efficiently and effectively, IHC utilizes passionate staff members, comprehensive medical recording systems, and an efficient clinic layout. By coordinating emergency medical technicians, pharmacists, and medical doctors, as well as UCSD student volunteers, the entire staff of IHC is able to provide the Tijuana community with critical examinations, medication, and health education, as well as providing UCSD students with personal experiences and skill sets needed to guide students towards entering the Health Care Profession. All undergraduate students are welcome to apply for the IHC membership; especially those interested in medicine and the health sciences. Our central goal shall be to promote and ensure the success of student involved in health care and to not only foster a feeling of commitment to underserved populations but to also stress the importance of genuine human interaction within health care.
